Frequently Asked Questions About Credit & Debt Counseling
Q. What if I owe the IRS?
If you owe any taxes at the time you come to Springboard, you should list them as a debt so that your counselor can discuss them with you.
Q. What if I want to file bankruptcy – will Springboard try to convert me to a Debt Management Plan?
Our counselors cannot give you legal advice regarding bankruptcy. Your bankruptcy attorney can explain how bankruptcy laws work and what the process entails. At Springboard we can give you information on other ways to handle debt, including personal finance education, budgeting help, and Debt Management Plans. As with all our clients, the final decision on what is best for you and your future is for you and your attorney to make.
If you do decide to declare bankruptcy, our certified counselors can provide the legally required pre-petition bankruptcy counseling and pre-discharge debtor education to residents of most states.
Q. Where can I get help to learn more about money management?
Springboard provides educational materials and publishes newsletters offering tips and good information about making the most of your money. We also provide in-person classes in our branch network and Internet resources.
